Abstract

  • Lectures 1/2: A brief introduction to constrained optimization on level sets in Rⁿ, the tangent space and the Lagrange multiplier, functional independence, submersions, introduction to submanifolds of Rⁿ, coordinates, the tangent space and the cotangent space, the tangent bundle and the cotangent bundle, examples
  • Lectures 2/3: statement of the optimal control problem, assumptions and requirements on the cost functional, study of attainable sets, compactness of attainable sets, Filipov's result on compactness, the statement of PMP in the geometric setting, the Hamiltonian and the co-state equation, fixed and free final time problems and the associated necessary conditions
  • Lectures 3/4: Three examples: the time-optimal problem for:
    1. the double integrator (underlying space - R × R),
    2. the linear oscillator (underlying space - R × R),
    3. the Dubin's car (underlying space - R × R × S¹)
